Alex Prager’s Play the Wind is about Los Angeles, memory, and the kind of nostalgia that shows up whether or not you invite it. After a monograph, a retrospective, and the general passage of time, she made a film where people drive through LA looking like they’re remembering something that may never have happened. The city is staged, restaged, and slightly distorted with props and cinematic tricks, because reality on its own is apparently not dramatic enough. There are also photographs and sculptures, because one medium would be too straightforward. In the end, it’s LA as Prager sees it: part dream, part set, part déjà vu with a production budget.
